St. John's Wort is a product of MMSPro
WHAT IS IT?
St. John's Wort is a common European herb that also has been naturalized in North America. It contains a number of aromatic, polycyclic compounds such as Hypericin, that have diverse medicinal properties.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
The most famous effect of Hypericin (though that may not be the active ingredient. See Perika Pro) is that of an antidepressant.
CAUTIONS
Although few side effects have been noted, photosensitivity is a theoretical possibility. It has only been noted in animals, so far. Recent studies suggest that it may accelerate the creation of cataracts. Anyone taking this substance should take plenty of antioxidants and wear sunglasses.
This product may reduce the effectiveness of digoxin, a heart medicine. Among other are cyclosporine, protease inhibitors (for HIV infection), oral contraceptives, amitriptyline, warfarin, theophylline, chemotherapy drugs, and possibly others.
Recent studies have shown that this substance is ineffective against HIV, and that AIDS patients can have a much more severe photosensitivity reaction.
Depression, especially severe depression, should be treated by a competent physician.
Pregnant or lactating women should see medical advice before taking any herb.
See Disclaimer.
DOSE
The usual dose is 1 capsule per day. For more severe cases, 1 capsule 3 times daily may be taken. Although St. John's Wort has been used for mild to moderate depression, new research is showing that 2 capsules 3 times daily may work for severe depression.
NHC sells
bottles of 60 capsules of St. John's Wort 150 mg (3% hypericin
standardized extract) for $7.43. The suggested retail
