WHAT IS IT?

Piracetam is a derivative of the amino acid GABA. Each capsule contains 800 mg. Other ingredient is gelatin capsule.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

Piracetam is sometimes called a "smart pill," or nootropic. It increases the sensitivity of the receptors of the brain involved in memory and learning. In fact, Piracetam is the original nooptropic and has been used worldwide since the 1970's. According to the Life Extension Foundation, "Studies in both animals and humans have demonstrated that piracetam can improve memory, increase attention and cognition, improve spatial learning, and enhance motor mechanisms. Piracetam is one of the most popular "smart drugs" that is used to increase intelligence, information processing ability, concentration, memory, and creativity. It has been shown to harmonize and synchronize the spheres of the brain by anchoring information within the brain."

Piracetam may enhance brain function when there is too little oxygen in the brain. A search on the internet will uncover quite a few studies on this substance. It has no FDA approved use in the USA.

Interestingly, in rat studies, older rats had the number of cholinergic receptors (acetylcholine is an important neurotransmitter involved in memory and learning) increase by 30 to 40 percent.

CAUTIONS

Piracetam may increase the effects of certain drugs, such as amphetamines, psychotropics, and Hydergine. Alcohol should probably be avoided. Adverse effects are rare but include insomnia, psychomotor agitation, nausea, gastrointestinal distress, and headaches. Piracetam has virtually no known toxicity or contraindications. However, do not use if pregnant or nursing.

DOSE

Take 3 capsules 3 to 4 times daily or as directed by a health professional. It is best used in conjunction with a fat soluble racetam such as Aniracetam, as well as with a acetylcholine precursor such as Alpha GPC or DMAE.
