Resveratrol

by (Name Withheld)

WHAT IS IT?

Resveratrol (trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene), is a phytoalexin, a substance found in a variety of plants (72 species ranging from Mulberry to peanuts) but is most famous and plentiful as a component of red grape skins. Each capsule contains Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) root extract 200 mg, standardized to 20% total resveratrol (40 mg) and 10% emodin (20 mg.) Other ingredients are a vegetable capsule.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

The dried roots of Polygonum cuspidatum have been used in traditional Japanese and Chinese medicine in a product called 'Kojo-kon,' used to treat a wide range of afflictions.

CAUTIONS

No toxicity is known. However, it closely resembles in structure the synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol. Since it also attaches to estrogen sites in the body and can act like an estrogen it should be avoided by women with breast cancer or who have a family history of it. The implications of this or how much could be a problem is not known yet.

See Disclaimer.
