WHAT IS IT? Licorice is the root of an herb, Glycyrrhiza glabra, native to central Europe but now imported from China. Each capsule contains 450 mg of root. Other ingredient is gelatin.
WHAT DOES IT DO? Licorice is one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Today it is also a favorite of naturopathic physicians. It contains glycyrrhizin (about 10% of weight) and flavonoids. Glycyrrhizin is an anti-inflammatory similar to prednisone or other corticosteroids, and inhibits the breakdown of the body's primary anti-inflammatory, cortisol.
CAUTIONS Licorice that still contains glycyrrhizin may increase blood pressure, cause water retention and promote potassium loss. However, it takes a lot of root (3,000 to 10,000 mg per day) over an extended period of time to cause these problems in most people, though it varies quite a bit. Patients taking high doses should receive potassium supplementation. See Disclaimer.
DOSE Take 1 or 2 capsules up to 3 times daily with food and water, or as directed by a health care professional.
NHC sells bottles of 100 capsules of Licorice 450 mg for $7.65. The suggested retail price is $8.50.
