WHAT DOES IT DO?
Vitamin C is perhaps the most famous and most controversial vitamin. Its proponents say it can "cure" cancer and the common cold. Its detractors say it will shorten life-span if taken in large doses.
Part of the problem is that like almost all antioxidants, Vitamin C can itself become an oxidizing agent if not included with other antioxidants in the "antioxidant network." It is the usual practice of conventional medicine to isolate an ingredient and test it by itself, forgetting that in nature, nutrients work as a team.
As controversial as Vitamin C is by itself, the ester version (Vitamin C's linked together in a chain) adds to the controversy. Its proponents say it is a better absorbed and non-acidic form of the vitamin. Critics say that there is no benefit from taking this more expensive version.
Vitamin C is essential in human nutrition. Humans and guinea pigs are the only animals that don't manufacture their own Vitamin C. Other animals synthesize the equivalent of megadoses of this vitamin in their own body. In general, Vitamin C should be taken with other antioxidants which are part of the antioxidant network but there are times when high doses are needed, hence this formulation.
Vitamin C functions in several capacities in the body. It is:
An antioxidant, one of the primary water-soluble antioxidants. Not only is it a powerful antioxidant by itself, but it also raises the levels of perhaps the most important one, glutathione. It also regenerates Vitamin E.
Immunostimulant.
Detoxifier.
Increases collagen synthesis and decreases wound repair time.
Vitamin C is included at high doses in
SupraPak and
Life Extension Mix among many other products.
CAUTIONS
Large doses may cause diarrhea. Interestingly, the greater the need, the less likely it is to cause diarrhea. Pregnant women should not take more than 500 mg per day.
