WHAT IS IT? DHEA 50 mg is dihydroepiandrosterone, an adrenocortical, steroid hormone. Each capsule contains 50 mg of DHEA. Inert ingredients include cellulose, gelatin, water and magnesium stearate. DHEA 25 mg sublingual
contains 25 mg of DHEA. Inert ingredients include mannitol, cellulose,
silica, and vegetable stearate. WHAT DOES IT DO? DHEA is the most abundant steroid hormone in the body. It is the "mother hormone" from which other steroid hormones are made, e.g. testosterone. DHEA levels decline with age and everyone over 40 is deficient in it compared to young adult levels.
CAUTIONS Men with prostate cancer or severe BPH should avoid DHEA. Men who take DHEA should also take saw palmetto extract to avoid BPH. Women should take melatonin to prevent breast cancer cell proliferation. It should also be taken with antioxidants to prevent any possible liver problems though these occur only at impossibly high doses. Recently, reports have surfaced of possible rare heart arrhythmias in some people taking high doses. Ideally, anyone wanting to take DHEA should have their levels checked with a saliva test to determine the dose which will restore youthful levels. The effects of DHEA may take 8 weeks to manifest. See Disclaimer.
DOSE For men, it may be 50 mg to 100 mg per day in divided doses, or in the morning. Women should use 25 mg or pregnenolone instead.
