WHAT IS IT? Black Seed is the oil of the seed from a plant known variously as Black Seed, Black Cumin, Black Caraway, Love in a Mist, Devil in a Bush, Fennel Flour, and many other names. Scientifically, it is known as Nigella sativa. It is not botanically related to the usual cooking cumin, aka caraway, nor is it related to Indian Cumin.
WHAT DOES IT DO? Black Seed is one of the oldest medicinal plants known in human history. It was used by the Assyrians long before the Egyptians who also used it. A vial of Black Seed oil was found in King Tut's tomb. The book of Isaiah in the Old Testament talks about it.
Various medieval herbals extolled its virtues but
its biggest supporter was probably the founder of Islam, The Prophet Muhammed
(PBUH), who is reported to have said "Black Seed has healing for all
illnesses except death."( Sahih Bukhari, Vol 7, Book 71, # 592)
Today it is called the "Seed of Blessing" in the Middle East because of its usefulness in so many conditions. Black Seed has been forgotten by the west until recently. Now over 200 scientific papers have been published about its virtues. The oil is rich in nutrients including Essential Fatty Acids, vitamins, minerals, various monosaccharides, 8 of the 9 essential amino acids, carotenoids, non-starch polysaccharides, sterol/sterolins, etc. There are actually more than a hundred substances many of which are unique. It is not known whether individual substances, e.g. nigellin, are responsible for its healing effects or, as with most herbs, the combination does the job. Black Seed is an immunomodulator. Traditionally, it has been used as a general body "stabilizer" that brings about homeostasis. It has also been used in many inflammatory conditions. Black Seed is a bronchodilator (opens up the airways.) It also increases bile flow in the liver and helps to expel stones. Other traditional uses (among about 50 in the Arabic texts) include everything from increasing mother's milk and decreasing impotence to expelling worms!
None, except pregnant women should avoid it. See Disclaimer.
DOSE Take 1 or 2 capsules daily or 1 tsp daily of the oil.
NHC sells 100 capsule bottles of Black Seed capsules for $18.00. The suggested retail price is $20.00.
