WHAT DOES IT DO? Iron is well known for being the critical atom in hemoglobin, the pigment in red blood cells that make them red, and enable those cells to transfer oxygen to cells and remove carbon dioxide. It is also used by the body in energy production and DNA synthesis. The recommended daily allowance of iron is 10 mg for males and 15 mg for females. Despite this small amount, iron deficiency is the commonest nutrient deficiency in the USA. Groups at greatest risk are children under 2 years of age, teenage girls, pregnant women and the elderly. Deficiency may affect from 30 to 50% of the people in these groups. In the case of the elderly, iron is poorly absorbed without stomach acid and the elderly are usually deficient in this too. Iron is also lost through menstrual bleeding, taking NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc. that cause stomach bleeding,) ulcers or malabsorption. Amino-Iron is efficiently
absorbed and utilized by the
CAUTIONS See the Disclaimer. Iron is the one mineral that the body never gets rid of. It stores it instead. Elevated iron levels are implicated in heart disease, risk of infection and cancer. Iron is a two edged sword. Too little is bad but too much is also bad since iron is a strong free radical inducer. Iron should not be supplemented without consulting a doctor to determine its need. Iron is one of the leading causes of death in accidental poisonings of children. Keep out of the reach of children! High intake of other minerals such as Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc interfere with Iron absorption. Vitamin C enhances Iron absorption. Iron can upset the stomach and turn the stools black.
