WHAT IS IT? Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALC) is a vitamin-like substance. The acetylated version is more bioavailable than L-Carnitine, especially to the brain. Note: We have three forms of this substance. L-Carnitine is a foundational carnitine supplement. Acetyl-L-Carnitine is especially useful to the brain. Carnitine Synergy is for people over 40 or those with health issues amenable to Carnitine.
WHAT DOES IT DO? L-Carnitine is essential for cellular energy. It transports essential fatty acids across cell membranes where they can be burned for fuel in the cellular mitochondria. The degree of Carnitine availability determines the ability of the mitochondria to burn calories and give the body energy. Carnitine is like the engineer on a steam locomotive who shovels coal into the boiler. The faster and harder he shovels the faster the train will go. The prescription drug Carnitor, is L-Carnitine and is prescribed for low energy levels. L-Carnitine can be synthesized in the body from L-Lysine, L-Methionine, and Vitamin C, Niacin and Vitamin B6. However, deficiencies are common and might be due to common deficiencies of its co-factors. Red meat also contains L-Carnitine.
Note: Acetyl L-Carnitine is also an ingredient in Neurotone.
CAUTIONS Almost no side-effects have been reported other than some isolated cases of skin rash, body odor or increased appetite. Carbohydrates antagonize Carnitine. It works best when carbohydrates are minimized. According to Crayon people sometimes do not benefit if they do not take enough. Some people need 2,000 mg of Carnitine per day. A few others need up to 4,000 mg per day. (Acetyl-L-Carnitine dose is about a quarter of this.) He also believes that the tartrate form gives the best results. People over 40 should take a combination of L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine for best results. See Carnitine Synergy. See Disclaimer.
DOSE Take 1 or 2 capsules per day on an empty stomach. Most research uses 500 mg 3 times daily. Studies show that taking this substance for a few months engenders much longer lasting benefits. The manufacturer prohibits us from discounting this product. NHC sells bottles of 30 capsules of Acetyl L-Carnitine 500 mg for $38.80. The suggested retail price is $38.80.
NHC also sells bottles of 60 capsules of Acetyl L-Carnitine 500 mg for $73.10. The suggested retail price is $73.10.
