WHAT IS IT? 200mg of Zen contains L-Theanine 100 mg and Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) 275 mg per capsule. L-Theanine is an amino acid commonly found in green tea. GABA is a inhibitory neurotransmitter naturally found in brain. Inert ingredients are silicon dioxide and carbowax. Do not confuse this with L-Threonine, a different substance.
WHAT DOES IT DO? L-Threanine is a relaxant. L-Theanine has a profoundly relaxing effect. In fact, it is a caffeine antagonist. The increase in alpha waves in the brain has been compared to a hot bath or a massage in effect. Unlike other relaxants, it does not cause drowsiness. Nor does it interfere with the ability to think. In fact, it enhances the ability to learn, probably by decreasing the worry that interferes with the ability to concentrate. It actually increases concentration and focuses thought. It imparts a feeling of well-being. L-Theanine's effects on the brain are due to several things. It increases a tranquilizing neurotransmitter called GABA (caffeine decreases it.) It increases dopamine, which is responsible in part for mood enhancement. It even protects neurons from glutamate excitotoxicity and reverses the damage. This kind of neuronal "burn-out" is often causes by lack of oxygen in the brain, usually from poor circulation. It also lowers blood pressure, probably by increasing GABA which lowers blood pressure. GABA is the most widespread and important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It relaxes and calms. Most tranquilizers or anticonvulsants are linked to GABA in some way. It does not cross the blood brain barrier well, however. GABA in doses of 5 grams orally increase Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels by 550% in 90 minutes in one study. This product contains L-Theanine and GABA. L-Theanine by itself is also available. It may be used when a weaker effect is desired.
